Why You May Have Varicose Veins in Only One Leg

Do you have enlarged, twisted leg veins that are highly visible through your skin? These are known as varicose veins, and they are a common concern, particularly for older individuals.

While many people struggle with varicose veins, few people understand what causes them and how they can be treated. Below are some facts about varicose veins, including why they may affect only one leg and what you can do about them.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins can occur anywhere in the body but are most prevalent in the lower extremities. They are often the result of poor circulation or trauma to the valves within the veins. When these factors cause blood flow to become slowed or blocked in the leg veins, it leads to significant changes in how those veins appear and function.

The veins will become swollen, enlarged, and entangled, giving varicose veins their signature appearance.  When the veins reach this point, they are often extremely painful and uncomfortable.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

While some may think varicose veins are an aesthetic concern, they present numerous symptoms that can affect your quality of life. The following are some of the most common problems that patients with varicose veins experience:

  • Swollen feet or ankles
  • Heaviness in one or both legs
  • Warm sensation throughout the legs and feet
  • Muscle cramping during sleeping hours
  • Itchiness around the affected veins

For many people, varicose veins can affect their ability to stand for prolonged periods of time or walk long distances. These symptoms typically develop when varicose veins are left untreated.

Why Do Varicose Veins Affect One Leg?

Patients with varicose veins often find that only one leg is affected by the condition. This can occur for several reasons. A circulatory issue may be affecting one side of the body, causing varicose vein symptoms in only one leg.

Varicose veins may also affect one leg if there is trauma to the veins on one side of the body. When an accident or injury damages the valves within veins in a certain area, it may lead to the formation of varicose veins. If only one leg were injured, you would not see signs and symptoms of varicose veins on the other leg.

Having varicose veins on only one leg does not mean they will never appear on the other leg. It simply means that the veins in your other leg are currently healthy, but they can still be at risk for developing varicose veins later on.
