Why Varicose Veins Appear in Younger Adults

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that usually happen just below the skin’s surface. Because they are so close to the skin, you can see them and feel them.

Typically, varicose veins are associated with older adults, but younger adults can get them too! Here are some reasons why.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the main reasons why varicose veins appear in younger adults.

Varicose veins, in some cases, are the result of increased pressure on your lower body. Women often experience weight gain, water retention, and swelling during pregnancy, which increases pressure everywhere.

Pregnant women may also develop varicose veins because their growing uteruses create pressure on the large vein that carries blood to the heart through the feet and legs.

The good news is that, in many cases, varicose veins fade away during your postpartum period.

If you are pregnant and dealing with varicose veins, here are some steps you can take to manage your condition and symptoms:

Try to move as much as possible if you have a sedentary job or spend a lot of time resting. Getting up and moving (as long as you are not on required bed rest for the sake of your pregnancy) can help decrease the pressure in your legs and increase circulation.

Keep your feet elevated. When you’re relaxing, try propping your feet up on some pillows. Be mindful not to keep them elevated while you sleep, though.

Avoid crossing your legs. Crossing your legs while sitting can increase pressure and reduce circulation in your legs.

Sedentary Lifestyle

Sedentary lifestyles can also cause varicose veins in young adults. Sitting does not foster good circulation throughout your legs.

If you have an office job or simply sit a lot, take breaks when possible. At the top of every hour, stand up and take a quick walk around the office or your home to get the blood moving.

You should also add low-impact exercise into your routine when possible for your overall health and improve your varicose veins. Low-impact exercises include walking, yoga, swimming, and cycling.

As your symptoms start to improve, you can try adding higher-impact activities to your routine, like running or weight lifting.

Obesity

Obesity is one of the leading causes of varicose veins in older and younger adults alike.

If you struggle with obesity, one of the best first steps you can take is changing your diet. Incorporating more whole foods, avoiding foods high in sodium, and consuming leafy vegetables with your meals are significant steps you can take to overcome obesity.
