What to Expect and How to Prepare for Your First Microphlebectomy Appointment

Do you have bulging varicose veins that you can clearly see beneath your skin but that are too large to be treated with sclerotherapy or ablation?

Microphlebectomy could be the solution you have been searching for. It can be performed directly in the office and yield excellent results with little downtime. This procedure can give lasting results with more than a 95 percent success rate.

If you are thinking about microphlebectomy, knowing what to expect and how to prepare for your session can put your mind at ease.

What to Expect from Microphlebectomy

When you come in for your first microphlebectomy appointment, the key varicose veins that should be removed will be identified. Your doctor will examine your legs while you stand to see where most of the problem is located. Veins to be removed will be notated with a surgical marker to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Once this is taken care of, it is time to begin the procedure. The treatment area will be sterilized, and local anesthesia will be applied at regular intervals along the vein that will be removed. While the anesthesia makes it possible to minimize your discomfort during the procedure, it also helps to separate the veins from the surrounding tissue.

The doctor will then eliminate your varicose veins using special phlebectomy hooks to remove them through tiny incisions.

The doctor will then dress the wound areas and apply an elastic compression dressing. You may also want to wear compression stockings for a week or so following the appointment.

Preparing for Microphlebectomy

The good news is that there isn’t much you need to do to prepare for your first microphlebectomy appointment. Perhaps the most important thing to do is to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the week leading up to your session. The success of your treatment can depend on this.

On the day of your appointment, you may need to alter your shower routine. When you get out of the shower, do not apply any lotions or oils to your skin. Lotions and other skincare products can make it much harder for your doctor to mark the veins with the surgical marker. Your skin should be clean and bare.

You will also need to bring the following items to your appointment:

  • Compression stockings
  • A pair of shorts
  • Comfortable walking shoes

The clothes you wear to the appointment should be loose and comfortable. Because your leg will be wrapped in wound dressings following the procedure, shorts are typically the most convenient option for clothes.

You will also be required to walk for roughly 30 minutes after your procedure, so a good pair of comfortable walking shoes is necessary.
