Hi, Dr. Adam Goldman here of the Metropolitan Vein and Aesthetic Center. I’m here to talk to you about a condition known as hyperhidrosis. This is a condition where you experience excessive underarm sweating and odor.
Why Do My Underarms Sweat?
The underarm sweating is necessary to control body temperature. However, it is often occurring to people in areas where there are normal temperatures, and it can be triggered by anxiety or stress. Also, it could just happen spontaneously, and it is potentially embarrassing, socially or at work. If you suffer from this condition, there is a treatment now called miraDry, which is minimally evasive, done in the office under local anesthesia, and is a permanent reduction in the sweating in that area of your body.
Is MiraDry Safe?
We are asked at times if this is safe; don’t you need these underarm glands sweating to control temperature? Where in fact, the underarm sweat glands are approximately 2% of these sweat glands that are in your body. There are approximately 2 million glands in all of your body. And they are particularly troublesome, these glands because they are a certain type of gland called an apocrine gland, which also produces odor. The other glands in your body called eccrine glands are actually not producing, and they will take over if we do the procedure to stop the underarm sweating, so there’s no risk at all to controlling body of temperature, and there are no side effects from eliminating that problem.
