Dr. Adam Goldman here at the Metropolitan Vein and Aesthetic Center. I am here to talk to you about a treatment for excessive underarm sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. It is defined as a more than fivefold increase in sweating that’s needed to control your body temperature and often occurs when it is not that warm in the room or in the location you’re in. It is a fairly common problem and often not addressed adequately.
What is MiraDry?
However, there is now an excellent treatment that is permanent or long-lasting, and that is known as MiraDry. In this procedure, we numb the area under the underarms with local anesthesia, and then approximately two hours later, after delivering the energy to turn down or shut off the sweat glands, you are now going to experience significantly less sweating and odor. Up to a hundred percent of people at two years have a significant reduction, and that is a permanent reduction.
Is MiraDry a Safe Procedure?
The question often comes up, “Is it safe? Do you need these sweat glands under your armpits?” And the answer is, that it only represents approximately 2% of the 2 million sweat glands in your body. The other issue that you’re going to have with the sweat glands in your armpit is that they are a specific type of sweat gland called apocrine glands. And these glands actually produce odor. The other glands in your body are eccrine glands and they are not odor-producing.
So, if we do the procedure to your armpits, you will have plenty of opportunities throughout the rest of your body to dispel heat. And you have no worries that there’s ever going to be a problem without those sweat glands operating in your armpit.
Is Sweating Necessary to Your Overall Health?
Sweating is absolutely necessary for your body as it helps to keep your body cool and comfortable by regulating your internal temperature.
However, your body has more than 4 million sweat glands that are used to achieve this goal. Your underarms have less than 2% of those sweat glands and will not negatively affect your body’s ability to sweat and regulate temperature.
