How to Treat Varicose Veins

Hi, Dr. Adam Goldman here of the Metropolitan Vein Aesthetic Center. I’m here to talk to you a little bit about varicose veins, specifically about the treatment of varicose veins

History of Treatment of Varicose Veins

The treatment of varicose vein goes back for centuries. Even in Roman times, they describe treating the varicose veins with surgery. And previously that was the best option if you had very large or uncomfortable spider or varicose veins. It was treated with surgery to remove the main vein that is leaking. And the superficial veins as well would be removed surgically. That unfortunately would require general anesthesia and usually you have a prolonged recovery.

Modern Treatment of Varicose Veins

In the last 15 years or so, we have developed newer techniques that can be done in the office, and basically closing those veins and leaving them in the leg without taking them out. However, they’re no longer functioning and causing any problems. And that is done by a multitude of ways. In general, it is done under ultrasound guidance at either a laser or a radiofrequency energy, could be applied inside the vein to seal the vein permanently. As well as, there are treatments including medications and a new development with a glue that can be used to close the vein permanently.
