How to Prepare for Your First HydraFacial Appointment

A hydrafacial is a great way to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. The process includes exfoliation, a pain-free chemical peel, gentle dirt extraction, and healing serums. Of course, the best way to make sure your skin is getting all of the benefits of this treatment is to prepare properly.

Essentially, you want your skin to be a “blank canvas.” You don’t want your skin to be irritated or sensitive before the treatment, so allowing your skin to be in its natural state is best.

Here are details on which skincare practices to stop in the time leading up to your hydrafacial and when to take them out of your routine.

Six Months Before

Unless otherwise directed by a clinician, stop your use of Isotretinoin products (like Accutane) six months before your hydrafacial appointment.

Two Weeks Before

Two weeks before your treatment, discontinue your use of:

  • Medium to deep chemical peels
  • Chemical resurfacing treatments
  • Laser treatments
  • Botox

You can have a Botox treatment done on the day of your hydrafacial. Just ensure that you do so after your hydrafacial, not before.

72 Hours Before

About three days before your treatment, try to reduce your exposure to sunlight. Staying indoors, in the shade, or using a hat or umbrella are all great means of reducing your sunlight exposure.

Additionally, do not visit a tanning bed within 72 hours of your treatment.

48 Hours Before

Two days before your treatment, you should stop some of your normal skincare routine practices. Discontinue your use of the following:

  • Generic tretinoin (or topical Retin-A)
  • Waxing products
  • Depilatories
  • Exfoliating products (glycolic acid and enzymes included)
  • OTC acne medications (benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, etc.)

When in doubt about a product, don’t use it.

Day Of Treatment

On the day of your treatment, do not shave your face. Doing so could lead to skin irritation.

Post Treatment

Oftentimes, you can return to your regular skincare routine after a few days. Your esthetician will review guidelines with you regarding moisturization, SPF, and other practices before you leave the office.

Reasons to Get a HydraFacial

While this list of preparations may seem extensive, patients with every skin type and tone can see major skin improvements after a hydrafacial. A hydrafacial rids your skin of blackheads and whiteheads, reducing current acne (and preventing future acne).

Its incredible hydrating aspects reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and its powerful, yet gentle treatments even out skin tone by reducing hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, dark spots, sunspots, and more. You can even expect tighter pores that are free of debris and excess oil.

People who get a hydrafacial can expect instant results and no pain, making it a great choice for anyone – including teens that have to deal with excess oil and adults with thinner skin who want that coveted youthful glow. A hydrafacial can usually be followed by other kinds of facial treatments immediately.
