Do Varicose Veins Increase Your Risk of Excess Bleeding?

After varicose vein removal.

Having varicose veins might seem like more of a cosmetic problem, but did you know they can they put your health at risk? Heavy bleeding from varicose veins may lead to considerable blood loss in a relatively short amount of time. In many cases, varicose veins do remain more of a cosmetic issue, but there are certain complications you should be aware of.

Bleeding from Varicose Veins

Though it’s more common for the varicose veins to bleed once an injury has occurred, the bleeding can occur without injury to the leg as well. Elevating your leg and applying pressure on the affected area can slow the flow of bleeding. You should raise your leg so that it is above your heart if possible, and do not attempt to put a tourniquet on your leg. Doing so can cause bleeding to become worse if done incorrectly. When the bleeding from your vein has stopped, it’s important to seek medical care as soon as possible.

Causes of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can develop from problems with the veins just below the surface of your skin. They can also occur if you have problems with the veins that are deeper inside your legs, such as venous insufficiency. Keep in mind that bleeding and other complications, such as blood clots, are more likely to occur when you have varicose veins that result from problems with deep veins rather than superficial ones.

Other Vein Problems

Varicose veins aren’t the only leg veins that can lead to bleeding problems. There are other factors that can increase your risk of bleeding from leg veins in general. If you have an underlying medical condition, such as heart or liver failure, or if you have leg ulcers, your risk of bleeding from leg veins is higher. Other risk factors include the aging process, which can cause varicose veins and spider veins to become worse and more likely to bleed. You’re also more likely to develop these types of vein problems if you are obese or if you are having hormonal problems.
