6 Great Exercises to Help Prevent Varicose Veins

While varicose veins can undoubtedly be hereditary, some great exercises will help prevent them from occurring. For those of you who didn’t know, varicose veins come as a result of poor circulation. And when they happen, many people are left feeling embarrassed and extremely self-conscious about them. Males and females are both susceptible to the development of varicose veins. But thankfully, these great exercises are something both men and women can do to get the blood flowing and keep these veins at bay!

Walking

Not only is walking great for your mind, but it’s fantastic for your body, too. Walking allows you to get your heart rate up while enjoying cardiovascular exercise at the same time. It’s less stress on your joints than running, and it’s something that anyone can enjoy. Be proactive about getting those steps in, whether it’s around the neighborhood or on a treadmill.

Go For a Bike Ride

Whether it’s a stationary bike or the kind you pedal around the neighborhood, bicycling is an enjoyable exercise to promote proper circulation. By biking regularly, this helps to build your calf muscles while simultaneously improving healthy blood flow.

Rock Those Feet

This is a simple movement that can be done at your desk while you work or when you’re sitting down watching television. Rock your feet back from heel to toe, moving slowly from side to side to stimulate blood flow. Best of all, it gives your tired and achy feet a beautiful stretch after a long day.

Leg Lifts

This is another simple movement that can be done while watching television or just whenever you’re relaxing at home. Lie on your back and lift each of your legs separately, up and then back down. Hold onto a heavy object, such as a chair, to support your back while doing so—alternative and repeat for best results.

Lunges

When you’re doing lunges, this works your muscles while stimulating blood flow. And best of all, it’s a great way to tone your legs, too. Step forward or back, or even step things up a notch with a curtsy lunge to tone your tush in the process.

Rest Your Feet and Elevate Your Legs

This one isn’t quite an exercise like the other five examples, but it’s a great way to promote circulation and blood flow in your body’s lower region. For this exercise, try to find a way to elevate your legs above your heart comfortably.

Like rocking your feet and leg lifts, this is something that can be done at your leisure while you’re relaxing at home. Propping your legs up when you’re sitting is another ideal way to promote circulation when resting/working at your desk.
